Carl DiManno

Technical Director

Carl has spent a career combining scientific analysis with artisanal approaches to manufacturing and production. He grew up in southeastern Massachusetts and graduated from Tufts University in 1989 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Carl joined Shell Oil Company in New Orleans as a process engineer, supporting gasoline production and petrochemical facilities. He specialized in process optimization while assisting the start-up of several new processing facilities throughout his tenure.

While in New Orleans, Carl graduated from the Tulane University Freeman School of Business with an MBA. In 1997, he took a position with Chevron Chemical in Northern California as a strategic analyst. Roles in project management followed in both petrochemical production and gasoline marketing.

Relocating to California allowed Carl to become familiar with the growing and production of wine. Seeing an opportunity to combine manufacturing experience with the hands-on aspect of winemaking, he enrolled in the UC Davis Viticulture & Enology master’s program, graduating in 2004. While in the program, Carl started working with Winesecrets, assisting the company in the administration of California Energy Commission contract while launching the STaRS product for energy efficient stabilization of wine.

While continuing to work with Winesecrets, Carl relocated to the east coast to establish Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard in Maryland in 2004. Having been involved with several startup businesses, he launched Mid Atlantic Winery Service in 2007 for winery consultation and beverage distribution.

Carl and his wife Erin started 868 Estate Vineyards in 2011. Located in Purcellville Virginia, the vineyard has 22 acres of grapes, a new state of the art winery, tasting room and restaurant. The winery moved to 100% estate grown fruit in 2017 and Carl won the Virginia Governor’s Cup in 2020 for the top wine in the state.

In 2022, Carl reemphasized his commitment to Winesecrets as a full-time contributor. He has led the company into advanced manufacturing and implementation of filtration systems for wine, water and other fluids. He has contributed to the establishment of Engineered Filtration Solutions for process applications and Recovery Water Solutions for the implementation of advanced filtration technology to reuse and recycle wastewater in wineries and other beverage production facilities.
